ABOUT US

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MENDIP SWING BIG BAND

Based in Langford, North Somerset, Mendip Swing provides a friendly, welcoming and inclusive home for musicians from all backgrounds and stages of life who want to explore, grow, and shine within the Big Band tradition.

We are fortunate to be mentored by Bristol jazz legend Andy Hague whose experience, encouragement, and passion continue to shape and inspire us.

Whilst some of our charts can be challenging, we don’t seek specific grades or formal qualifications other than an ability to read music.

You can see from the section on the band that there is no ‘typical member’ our backgrounds are many and varied. We welcome all; so no need to feel reticent and it would be great to welcome more women to the mix, especially if you play trombone!

A bit of history

‘Mendip Swing’ was formed and led in 2005 by drummer Richard Fairs with the ambition of providing musicians an opportunity to experience playing in a classic 17 piece ‘big band’.

Over more recent years we have operated as a collective team, dedicated to fostering personal growth in both solo and ensemble performance, striving to achieve a high standard of musicianship

Members and visitors contribute a modest subscription to cover our expenses.

Why we do it

First and foremost we play for the sheer fun and joy of it. Meeting like-minded souls is always a pleasure. For those who want there is time for a drink and chat after rehearsal. The band has also spawned a number of side-projects; so plenty of scope to explore other avenues.

As a team we nurture both individual expression and collective excellence - developing confident soloists, strong section players and a cohesive ensemble, while striving for high standards of musicianship.

Our repertoire

We actively seek opportunities to share our music with the wider community through engaging public performances.

Although playing numbers associated with traditional swing bands, our extensive repertoire has something for everyone, from the timeless swing of Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Buddy Rich, to a diverse mix that spans musical theatre, film themes and Latin rhythms; set lists are curated to suit the nature of each event.

In addition we also benefit from tailored arrangements from our mentor Andy Hague and to play his  contemporary compositions.

For vocals, Fiona and Tracey - our beloved ‘Mendip Sisters’ and our energetic lead trumpet player Ray, add something special to the vibe and are particularly popular with audiences!
